Being a neutral runner, I wear both Hoka Clifton Edge and 8. They feel comfortable and feature the same specifications. However, I found a few distinctive specs which make them stand out in their series.

So, what are the differences between Hoka Clifton Edge vs Clifton 8? They have structural differences in the midsole. Clifton Edge has extremely resilient CMEVA foam, while Clifton 8 features typical CMEVA foam. Moreover, Clifton Edge’s price is higher than that of its competitors.

Hoka Clifton Edge and Clifton 8 Features

I compared them feature-wise in this section. Thus, you can understand which pair offers value for price.

Construction

Hoka uses similar technologies to make both shoes. I experienced soft cushioning underfoot wearing them. The midsole is designed to give optimum comfort to wearers. However, they have differences in their midsole foam.

“Extremely resilient foam” is used in the Clifton Edge midsole. As a result, I didn’t feel any additional weight, while the shoe kept my feet sweat-free. Moreover, responsiveness is amazing for the early-stage meta rocker and resilient foam combo.

On the other hand, compression-molded EVA foam makes the Clifton 8 super-cushy. I liked the lightweight feel, too, when running. At the same time, the correct balance of softness and stiffness helps me during the tempo runs.

Upper

Runners appreciated the aesthetically appealing upper of Clifton Edge and Clifton 8. I also felt the air in my feet during long runs.

Engineered upper mesh promotes the breathability of Clifton Edge. Also, the upper features perforation. Perforated upper aids air in a hot environment. So, you can wear them in the hot summer without thinking twice. Besides, an embossed TPU in the front of the pair supports extra weight and offers structure.

Clifton 8 also uses engineered mesh in the upper. Interestingly, the mesh is entirely vegan. The blend of TPU and mesh lets your feet breathe while running. I felt discomfort in the long runs with the Clifton 8. The reason is the thicker and padded gusseted tongue. Some wearers liked the tongues as they kept the runners’ feet snug.

Durability

According to the reviewers, both footwear delivers decent durability performance. I agree, as my pairs lasted roughly 500 miles.

Strategically placed EVA in the Clifton Edge promotes durability. Also, I got excellent traction when running on a wide range of terrains. The longevity of the mesh upper is appreciated. Additionally, a stable upper resists regular wear and tear effectively. Nevertheless, I saw damage in the midsole after running 300 miles.

My Clifton 8 lasted 450 miles. The shoe has rubber padding, aiding durability. I also noticed wear in the midsole after wearing them for 300 miles, especially in the area where EVA foam is exposed. I am not saying the midsole gets completely damaged, but you can notice the damage easily.

Stability

Both the Hokas have the same heel-to-toe drop of 5 mm. But, they provide different stability because of the symmetry of the shoes. Moreover, Clifton Edge and 8 are stable footwear. This means that they support natural gait without motion control.

Clifton Edge features a wide base and an active foot frame. I experienced excellent stability during landing for such a design. The wider toe box makes it suitable for wider feet.

In contrast, the cushioned midsole of the Clifton 8 gives average stability while leaving a plusher feel. Moreover, the pair lacks structural stability elements. Thus, this pair was less stable than its competitor.

Weight

Clifton Edge Men’s and Women’s shoe’s average weight is 8.9 oz. and 7.6 oz. respectively. On the flip side, Clifton 8 weighs 8.9 oz. for men and 8.7 oz. for women. Note that the weight of the shoes varies based on the size. I wear a US size 12.5 of Clifton Edge, weighing 10.4 oz.

Besides, a few sizes of Clifton Edge are bulky than the Clifton 8. But Clifton Edge is lightweight.

Size & Fittings

As said, a wider heel area supports stability and landing. So, this footwear fits correctly on a wider foot. I found it a little roomy even though I have overpronation. However, I felt snug after pulling the laces. The medial walls and heel collar are also high, giving a narrow midfoot fitting.

Conversely, Clifton 8 pairs are true to size. The midfoot feels narrow. Additionally, the toe box is wider and fits well in wider feet. The heel has more room than the Clifton Edge.

Stack Height

I had a bouncy feel when running with the Hoka Clifton 8. The reason is the stack height of 33.7 mm in the heel area and 25.1 mm in the forefoot portion.

Then again, I recommend Clifton Edge to one of my friends for its 33 mm heel and 28 mm forefoot height. My friend has flat feet, and he felt comfortable wearing them. Simultaneously, I found this pair cozy.
